The right to education is a fundamental human right and access to unique opportunities. It is also important for solving current and future challenges, such as climate change, increasing inequality, and the escalation of conflicts.

The world is currently changing very fast. These changes affect decisions made by states, including ours — the Republic of Estonia. In recent years, decisions made in the field of inclusive education, employment reform, and the Estonian Lifelong Learning Strategy have contributed to introducing new groups of adult learners, including those with mental-health-related special needs, into the educational environment.

These circumstances set new demands to teachers as well. According to the Estonian Lifelong Learning Strategy , we are facing the task of creating training opportunities for all residents of our country that are consistent with their needs and capabilities and allow them to learn throughout their lives.

This is necessary in order to provide everyone with decent opportunities for self-realization in society, at work, and in family life. One of the guiding principles of the education management in Estonia is the inclusive approach. Inclusive education primarily means the right of everyone to receive a high-quality education. It happened to me as well when I volunteered to join a project aimed to adapt and help people with mental-health-related special needs to enter the free labor market.

During that course, my opinion concerning the possibility of applying this approach changed from doubt to conviction that it is a universal solution. According to the principles of andragogy, an adult learner should have a leading role in the learning process.

Being a fully developed person, the learner sets specific learning objectives for themselves and strives for autonomy, self-realization, and self-direction. It should be noted, however, that, due to an inadequate assessment of reality and lack of experience, the learners from this category often do not have a motive not only for learning, but for any changes in life; and even if they do have some experiences, these are often very negative.

However, the more I learned about the andragogical principles, the clearer it became to me how universal this system is.

The experience of foreign experts supports this idea. Minahan emphasizes the necessity of a flexible learning environment that can be adapted as needed to respond to changing situations. Williams also demonstrates the importance of creating a favorable environment, but emphasizes that educators should be able to recognize early warning signs, especially in the case of learners who do not know how to describe how they are feeling; as well as to keep calm and maintain control of the situation without getting pulled into a power struggle if problems arise.

Teachers play a vital role in the lives of learners with mental disorders, both in developing their skills and supporting them. It is important to develop positive relationships with all learners, but it is particularly important for learners with mental disorders. Everything that my foreign colleagues talk about is reflected in the andragogical model of education.

Therefore, in my opinion, we can conclude that it is the andragogical principles and methods that can help in teaching such difficult target group of adult learners, but only after appropriate adaptation.
